INSTRUCTIONAL MODEL
CAPIT is an Explicit Systematic Phonics Instructional program. And because CAPIT is a Curriculum, teachers teach CAPIT in front of the class every day for about 10 minutes. This instructional time gives teachers a chance to explain the new Lesson which introduces a New Skill, as well as review old material. CAPIT provides the lesson plan. The New Skills are highlighted in the curriculum. These New Skills are then retaught to the student when they get on their device, and the student can always access them for reinforcement.
After 10-Minutes of Explicit Systematic Phonics Instruction, students spend 15-20 minutes completing CAPIT lessons—every day. The lessons are competency based, so students must master the material before they progress. Students progress at their own pace, some fast, others are slower, and most at an average speed. Teachers are available at this time to provide help and support.
Because CAPIT is a complete phonics program in which students read and spell full sentences, students will sometimes make mistakes. When students make three mistakes in a row in specific interfaces, a Lock will disable the app. In our Teacher Onboarding, we explain to teachers what could trip students up in each interface, what phonics skills students could be struggling with at each point on the phonics continuum, and how the teachers can re-teach the relevant skills. Teachers then disable the Lock and help their students so they can get back to learning.
